What Is Business Analytics and Why It Matters

Business analytics is the process of collecting, analyzing and interpreting the data a company generates in order to make better decisions. It's not "staring at charts": it's turning events (a visit, an order, a support ticket) into answers to business questions.

The gap between "we want to be data-driven" and "we actually are"

According to Forrester's Insights-Driven Businesses research, 74% of companies say they want to be data-driven, but only 29% manage to connect analytics to real operational actions. The problem is almost never a lack of data — it's a lack of interpretation.

McKinsey Global Institute estimates that data-driven organizations are 23x more likely to acquire customers than their competitors. Not because they have more data: because they read it fast and react.

The 4 questions analytics has to answer

  1. What happened? (descriptive — e.g. sessions, revenue)
  2. Why did it happen? (diagnostic — e.g. organic traffic drop on one category)
  3. What will happen? (predictive — e.g. churn forecast)
  4. What should I do? (prescriptive — e.g. which segment to reactivate)

Most company dashboards stop at step 1.

Real case: furniture ecommerce, +34% category revenue

An Italian furniture ecommerce client of ours (around 85,000 sessions/month) had a 71% bounce rate on the "sofas" category — well above the site average (48%). The marketing team kept increasing Meta Ads budget to compensate.

Analyzing GA4 with Metriko we found the cause in 48 hours: 62% of paid traffic landed on out-of-stock product variants, because the product feed wasn't filtering inventory status.

Fix: dynamic filter in the feed + 301 redirects to available variants. Result in 6 weeks: bounce -19 points, category revenue +34%, Meta CPA -27%.

Analytics ≠ reporting

Reporting tells the past. Analytics decides the future. The operational difference: a report ends in a slide, an analysis ends in a ticket with an owner and a deadline.
