How to Read Google Analytics: The 5 Numbers That Matter

To read Google Analytics you only need five numbers: users, traffic source, landing pages, engagement and conversions. Everything else is detail. Learn where those five live, always compare them to the previous period, and ten minutes a week is enough.

Two settings first

Set the date range to last 28 days and switch on the comparison with the previous period — a number without a comparison is not information. Then check that a key event (purchase, form, booking) exists in Admin → Events, otherwise GA4 will show traffic forever without telling you if it produced anything.

The five numbers

  1. Users (Reports → Acquisition → Overview) — how many people came. Look at the trend, not the absolute figure.
  2. Traffic source (Acquisition → Traffic acquisition) — where they came from. Sort by conversions.
  3. Landing pages (Engagement → Landing page) — the doors people enter through. One weak door can cost more than a whole channel.
  4. Engagement rate — the share of visits that were not a bounce. Compare it by channel: low engagement on a paid channel usually means the ad promised something the page does not deliver.
  5. Conversions (Engagement → Conversions) — the only number that pays the bills. Always read it next to its channel.

Mistakes that distort everything

Comparing a 7-day range to a 30-day one. Reading totals without segmenting by channel. Panicking over a two-day dip. And ignoring internal traffic — filter out your own visits or your best "customer" is you.

The shortcut: have it read to you

Knowing where the five numbers live is one thing; interpreting them every week is another. That is the part people quietly stop doing after a month.

Metriko connects to your Google Analytics 4 in about a minute and sends you those same five numbers as plain text: what went up, what went down, why it probably happened, and what deserves attention. You read it like a short message instead of navigating menus. GA4 stays your source of truth — Metriko is just the translation layer on top.
