How to Choose Analytics Software for Your Company
The business analytics market is worth over $100 billion (Statista, 2024) and growing double digits. Translation: you have hundreds of tools to choose from and almost all look identical on their landing page. Here's an honest framework.
The 5 criteria that actually matter
1. Time from login to first useful insight
A serious tool gives you a business answer within 10 minutes of connecting your data. If after 3 days you're still configuring custom dimensions, the tool is working against you.
2. Compatibility with your primary data source
73% of companies use Google Analytics 4 as their primary source (HubSpot State of Marketing 2024). If your tool requires a data warehouse to run, budget the total cost: BigQuery + ETL + maintenance easily reach €500-2,000/month before you've even run one analysis.
3. Who will actually use it
- Technical analysts only → Looker, Metabase, PowerBI
- Marketing and management without SQL → natural-language tools (Metriko, ThoughtSpot)
- Mixed teams → you need a shared semantic layer
4. Real 12-month cost
List price is almost always fiction. Ask about: extra seats, workspaces, storage, premium connectors, support. In enterprise B2B the real TCO is typically 2.3x the quoted price (Gartner, 2023).
5. Data lock-in
If you can't export to CSV or Parquet in one click, you're buying a gilded cage.
The 3-day test
Take the same dataset and ask 2-3 candidate tools to answer the same 3 business questions (e.g. "why did conversion rate drop in March?"). Time it. Whoever gets to an actionable answer first wins — not whoever has the prettiest chart.
A concrete case
The same furniture ecommerce in our portfolio (85k sessions/month) evaluated 4 tools: two enterprise (avg license €1,400/month + setup), one SQL self-service, and one AI-native. The marketing team (2 people, zero SQL) reached the first operational action in:
- Enterprise tool A: 11 days (with external consultant)
- Enterprise tool B: 6 days
- Self-service SQL: never (dev backlog)
- AI-native: 38 minutes
The "time-to-first-action" criterion outweighed price.
Most common mistake
Choosing the most powerful tool instead of the most adopted one. A dashboard used every day by 6 people is worth more than a data warehouse consulted once a month by the CTO.
